Eligibility

Am I eligible to enroll in benefits?
You are eligible to participate in 2019 Benefits Enrollment if you are classified as a regular full-time employee who works at least 35 hours per week (70 hours per pay period), or as a regular part-time employee who works at least 24 hours per week (48 hours per pay period).

Can I enroll my dependents?
Yes. You can enroll your dependents in the benefits you elect, including your spouse*, children up to age 26, and a disabled child of any age. BJC’s Summary Plan Descriptions (SPD) define a child as an employee’s natural child, stepchild, legally adopted child, or a child placed with you for adoption. Your dependent cannot be enrolled in benefits by more than one BJC employee. Please see Benefits SPD for more details.

*Memorial Employees: Spouses are not eligible to participate in the BJC Medical Plan if they have access to group medical coverage from their employer.

Do I need to verify my dependent's eligibility?
If enrolling a new dependent or a dependent not previously verified as eligible by BJC, you will need to provide documentation verifying their eligibility for coverage. Secova, BJC’s dependent eligibility verification administrator, will mail a packet to your home detailing requirements. Verifying a spouse requires a marriage certificate, utility bill, bank statement or tax return. You may verify a child with a birth certificate or tax return. You must provide Secova with documentation to ensure your dependents have coverage. BJC conducts periodic audits to ensure that dependents enrolled in the health care and insurance plans meet the criteria for coverage.

New Employees & Newly Benefits-Eligible Employees (Job Status Changes)

All new employees or newly benefits-eligible employees should review these important steps to understand BJC benefits and how to complete benefits enrollment.

When can I enroll?
As a new employee who meets BJC's eligibility requirements, you have 31 days from your hire date to enroll in benefits. See the Benefits Enrollment Guide for more information. If you experience a change in your job status (you change from part-time to full-time employment), you have 31 days from the date of your status change to enroll.

When benefits coverage begins for employees and dependents
In general, coverage for you and your eligible dependents will begin on the first day of the month after 30 days of employment, provided you complete your online enrollment within 31 days of your hire date.

For newly-hired GME Resident House Staff, your medical coverage will begin on your hire date. All other coverage will begin on the first day of the month after 30 days of employment, provided you complete your online enrollment within 31 days of your hire date.

For job status changes, coverage will be effective on the first day of the month following the change in status.

When can I change my coverage?

  • Annual Enrollment
    Every fall, BJC holds an annual benefits enrollment period in which eligible employees can enroll in certain health and welfare benefits for the following calendar year. Annual enrollment provides you with an opportunity to review your benefit options, choose the options that best meet your needs, and re-enroll in flexible spending accounts.
     
  • Life Events or Job Status Changes
    If you experience a qualified change in status event during the calendar year, you must request a benefit election change within 31 days. The change in coverage must be consistent with the qualified change in status event.

    In general, your coverage will be effective on the first day of the month on or after the date of your "change in status" event. If the change in status event is birth, adoption or placement for adoption, coverage will be effective on the date of the event. If you marry, coverage for your spouse will begin on the first day of the month on or after your marriage date. For job status changes, coverage will be effective on the first day of the month following the change in status.

To enroll in benefits due to a life event or job status change:

  • Select the myBJCnet tab on the BJCnet home page or go to https://myBJCnet.carenet.org.
  • Log on using your BJC network ID and password.
  • On the myBJCnet landing page, select myBenefits.
  • Along the left navigation bar, select Enroll Due to Life Event.
  • Follow the instructions. The enrollment tool will guide you through all the steps for enrolling.
